Wine tour guide Alghero area - Update 2024

Alghero

Wine tastings, winery tours and wine

All the beauty Sardinia has to offer comes together in Alghero. A wonderful ancient city centre where the historical link with Catalonia is evident. An authentic port from where you can take beautiful day trips. Amazing beaches around the corner were you can swim among the fish in nice blue water that you will most likely only know from the internet or an outdated travel brochure. And of course the most delicious wines grown in one of the many wineries just north of Alghero. Speaking from personal experience, I can truly say this is the ideal holiday destination for people who love the beach, culture and excellent wines.

Wine tastings in Alghero

For wine lovers, there is a lot to discover and enjoy in north-eastern Sardinia. Located just above Alghero, you can visit the two large, well-known wineries Sella & Mosca and Cantina Santa Maria la Palma, among others.

A summary of the wine tastings and tours you can take in and around Alghero. Starting with the tours and tastings at the wineries themselves.

Cantina Santa Maria la Palma is a Società cooperativa where some 300 winemakers supply their grapes to produce over 5 million bottles altogether. Among them are some little gems in the Prestige and Akènta ranges. A very special one, for instance, is the Akènta Sub, a sparkling wine aged for 6 to 10 months at a depth of some 40 metres under the sea off the coast of Alghero.

A guided tour at the winery in Santa Maria la Palma can be completed with four different wines.

You can choose between the Classica (Papiri, Punta Rosa and the Cagnulari - €20 p.p.), the Premium (Akenta Rosé, Akenta Cuvée 71, Trìulas or Estiu and the Timbenia or the Naramae - €30 p. p.), the Prestige (Ràfia, Redìt and the Recònta - €35 p.p.) or the Akènta (Akènta, Akènta Sub and the Akènta Rosè or the Akenta Cuvée - €35 p.p.) winetasting tour. Reservations are required and can be made in advance via the website.

Wine tasting, by the way, is also possible in the wine shop of Cantina Santa Maria la Palma in the town of Alghero itself.

Another well-known winery is Sella & Mosca, part of the Terra Moretti Group since 2016. At Sella & Mosca, there are multiple choices. A tour of the wine cellars followed by a wine tasting starts from €13 p.p. You will be given the Oscarì at the end of the tour. The Tradizione wine tour (you will be served the Torbato Brut and the Cala Reale) costs €15 p.p. And finally there is the Innovazione wine tour where you can taste the Torbato Brut Rosé, the Ambat and the Tanca Farrà. This wine tour and tasting costs €35 p.p.

Booking is required and can easily be done online via the website.

At Tenute Delogu, there are two options. The Magic Tasting (3 wines of your choice with little snacks) for €30 p.p. or the Celebration Tasting (4 wines of your choice with little snacks) for €35 p.p. You can make reservations via their website application form.

Wines and wine tourism in and around Alghero

Winemakers in Sardinia are seeing more and more of the opportunities that are available to promote their wines and attract the attention of tourists. Just like the other wine regions (especially Tuscany and Veneto), there is a growing number of tours and tastings offered by Alghero wineries.

The wine tourism in Alghero is mainly driven by the Consorzio Vini Alghero DOC (officially Consorzio Tutela Vini di Alghero DOC). This consortium of winemakers provides a combining of resources. It supervises the quality of the wines produced and ensures that they are brought to the attention of prospective buyers and wine lovers in the most effective way.

Cagnulari - a delicious red wine from Alghero

Besides the autochthonous grape varieties Torbato (white) and Cagnulari (red) that are cultivated specifically in Alghero, wines are mainly made from Cabernet, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Sangiovese grapes.

Other wine regions nearby to visit

Those with access to their own (or rented) car can easily visit the other regions in Sardinia. The most famous -and only DOCG- wine of Sardinia is obviously the Vermentino di Gallura. A dry white wine. You really can find Vermentino all over the island, and it differs quite a bit in flavour. It depends on the method of winemaking.

Wine lovers who are on holiday in Sardinia can explore several wine regions from Alghero. The best known is the Gallura wine region (north-eastern Sardinia), where the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG (delicious dry white wine) is the jewel in the crown of the island's quality wines. More centrally located is the region of Nuoro, where the renowned Cannonau di Sardegna originates. This robust red wine is made of the Cannonau grapes. A grape variety with very similar characteristics to the French Grenache and Spanish Garnacha grape.
