Wine Tastings in Italy

Thanks to the enormous rise of wine tourism in Italy, the offer of wine tastings has increased. Both in numbers and in the type of wine tasting to be booked. Previously, the focus was on the traditional introduction to the winery, the winemaking process itself and tasting a winemaker's different wines. Nowadays, the visitors to a wine region or winery want more. A lovely wine experience that's more than simply the list just mentioned. Think walking or cycling through the vineyards or combining wine tasting with local food during an attractive diner or relaxing lunch.

It is exactly those special wine adventures that have been the trigger to tell more about them at avinturo. Sharing the best wine tasting experiences so that more wine lovers and tourists can discover the unique combination of beautiful landscapes, passionate wine families, delicious wines, local food and the authentic culture and sights of a particular wine region or wine town.

More than 350 Italian wine regions

Italy is known for its huge number of different autochthonous grape varieties. When you add to that the many thousands of different wineries and winemakers, you can probably estimate the huge number of Italian wines. To help you find your way around this website: the base is the page with no less than 358 different Italian wine regions, sorted by region. If you are on holiday in one of these regions (or plan to go there), you can easily see which wine regions you can visit.

Within these wine regions, the various wine consortia (collaborations to jointly promote a wine/wines or a wine region), organise wine festivals and other events. In turn, these wine consortia (of which there are over 100 in Italy) also collaborate, in some cases, with local (tourism) organisations, restaurants and places of interest by creating a wine route in their area. Almost 100 of these official wine routes (Strade dei Vini in Italian) are a great way to spend a day (or several days) exploring the area - and, of course, its wines. You can combine several wine tastings. An increasing number of wineries now offer the possibility of staying overnight. Pretty convenient, if you are with your own car.

Our personal Italian winery tastings and wine adventures story

Our first experience with both Italy (it has always seemed far too hot for us there in summer) and wine tastings (we did drink some wine for a while) was in 2015. After a long weekend in Rome in the spring and a summer holiday with our friends and our kids, we were so excited about the climate, the surroundings, the culture and the food and drink that we have been there practically every year since. In that first summer holiday, it turned out we also had our first wine tasting at Cantina Leonardo da Vinci in Vinci retrospectively. A traditional wine tasting, in the room where the wines were displayed for sale.

It was the start of our remarkable wine adventure. We have visited numerous different regions and vineyards. From the Prosecco region in Veneto to Montefalco in Umbria. From Franciacorta in Lombardy to Alghero in Sardinia and Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco in Piedmont. And from Soave and Valpolicella in -again- Veneto to Florence, Montepulciano, Siena and Chianti in Tuscany.

Cycling between the vineyards in the Franciacorta (Italian sparkling wine - Champagne) region to a memorable and unforgettable picnic in Arnaldo Caprai's vineyards in Montefalco. Or from dining In Lazio with a finishing rosé on the rooftop at Etruscaia to enjoy a beautiful sunset over the sea to a stunning panoramic view from Stefano Accordini's highest winery in Valpolicella. Not to mention lunch and tasting sparkling Prosecco bubbles in the almost magical-'Cartizze' the heart of the prosecco wine region between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano.

In the meantime, our next wine trip is already in preparation ...
